Quando possibile uno scozzese non rinuncerà mai al suo barbecue in giardino

Le informazioni in questo articolo hanno come obbiettivo finale dare un’idea di come vive uno scozzese medio in Scozia
Come sempre io partirei con degli esempi per dare più famigliarità al discorso

Le abitudini medie di un Italiano, senza dilungarci troppo possono essere riassunte in:
Sveglia al mattino presto, caffè con la moka in casa o cappuccino e cornetto al Bar (Bar tipicamente aperto dalle 6:30/7:00), lavoro, pausa pranzo spesso lunga diverse ore chiamata anche “turno dello spezzato”, cena alle 20:00 o 21:00


Non vi tedierò oltre su altri argomenti quali il cibo, il tempo libero, o altri dettagli che tutti conosciamo

Introduzione

Iniziamo con l’entrare nell’ottica di un britannico.
Si ho detto britannico e non scozzese perché la quasi totalità di queste abitudini possono essere accostate anche a un inglese o irlandese, con sottili differenze

ci sono poi alcune similitudini con le nostre abitudini, si potrebbe paragonare l’uso di bere espressi dagli italiani a quello di bere tè dei britannici

E sebbene sia molto diverso, per motivi più complessi che tratterò in un secondo articolo, l’andare al pub è un po come il nostro andare al bar e magari giocare a carte con degli amici o farsi un aperitivo

La routine di Adam Mc Gregor 35 anni

Prenderemo come esempio la routine di questo scozzese

Adam si alza alle 7 del mattino, lui lavora in un museo a Edimburgo e sa che dovrà essere li per le 9:30

Prepara una tazza di caffè solubile di una tipica marca britannica, accompagnandolo con del toast imburrato
Esce di casa e prende il bus, tipico degli abitanti di Edimburgo usare il bus pur avendo un’automobile parcheggiata in giardino

Adam sta leggendo il giornale fresco di stampa, distribuito gratuitamente dalla compagnia di autobus, ma si rende conto che è già arrivato a destinazione e quindi scende alla sua fermata.
S’imbatte in una tipica caffetteria locale, e decide di deliziarsi con una tazza di tè e un “breakfast roll” ovvero un panino con uova, bacon, salsiccia, funghi o fiocchi di patate, condito dalla sua salsa preferita la “brown sauce”

Adam inizia a lavorare e fa pausa verso le 12:00 circa, la pausa dura 30 minuti e come pranzo lo aspetta qualcosa di veloce come una pie comperata la stessa mattina dopo aver fatto colazione (le pies sono snack di pasta sfoglia ripiene di carne o verdure), durante il lavoro comunque non mancheranno delle piccole pause per una tazza di tè

Sono le 17:30 e il lavoro per Adam è terminato (l’orario di Adam è a grandi linee uno standard per la Scozia, infatti attorno alle 17:30 / 18:00 la maggior parte dei locali e servizi chiudono), è quasi ora di cena (tipicamente in Scozia si cena attorno alle 18:00 / 18:30) ed essendo venerdì una buona idea è fare un salto al pub
Adam si riunisce con i suoi amici, ordina un paio di pinte, e poi altre due, gusta una bistecca di angus e rimane al pub fino alle 21:00
Adam prende un bus e torna a casa, guarda un film e va a letto

Il giorno libero di Adam

Oggi Adam è di riposo, come lo sarà anche il mattino seguente avendo due giorni liberi come la maggior parte degli scozzesi
Adam si sveglia attorno alle 9:00, e decide di uscire per farsi un giro in un parco, oggi c’è una fiera di antiquariato e non vuole perdersela
Sfortunatamente come molti scozzesi lui non vive in centro città, ma in un quartiere di case in stile americano, senza caffetterie o supermercati per almeno due miglia


Adam quindi prende l’auto e va a far colazione in una caffetteria del villaggio alla periferia di Edimburgo, oggi prenderà una “full scottish breakfast” ovvero una colazione simile a quella inglese che conosciamo ma più ricca e sostanziosa, il piatto contiene: salsicce scozzesi (lorne sausage), uova, bacon, “tattie scone” una specie di focaccia di patate, “hash brown”, dei fiocchi di patate pressati normalmente di forma triangolare, pomodori alla piastra, funghi, toast con burro salato, “Haggis” piatto nazionale con interiora di pecora, “black pudding” cereali, carne e sangue di maiale, “baked beans” fagioli al sugo, il tutto accompagnato da una bella tazza di tè

finita la colazione Adam si reca al parco per godersi la fiera e una passeggiata
Seduto sulla panchina Adam pensa a come sfruttare queste giornate, potrebbe fare un campeggio al lago, giocare a golf, o andare a pesca
Decide infine di chiamare i suoi amici, e organizzare una serata in un particolare pub di Edimburgo ricavato dentro a una chiesa sconsacrata, (usanza abbastanza diffusa in Scozia) ad Adam piace molto quel pub dove viene suonata ogni sera musica folk e dove spesso vengono organizzati dei “ceilidh” ovvero balli tradizionali dove di solito viene indossato il kilt

La routine di Lynn Pinkerton 45 anni

Lynn vive a Inverness ed è madre di 3 figli, due di loro frequentano la high school “liceo”, l’altro la primary school “elementari”, gestisce una caffetteria in centro, suo marito invece lavora come impiegato nella Bank of Scotland

Lynn come ogni mattina si alza presto, attorno alle 7:00 e accende la tv selezionando il canale di BBC News
Prepara per tutti una rapida colazione fatta di caffè lungo, toast, e crumpets con golden syrup “tipico dolce britannico”, ed esce di casa prima dei suoi figli e di suo marito

Arrivata al lavoro inizia il suo turno, dalle 9:00 alle 17:00, con una breve pausa di 30 minuti attorno a mezzogiorno mangiando direttamente nella sua caffetteria un “club sandwich” e bevendo “Irn Bru” una tipica bevanda scozzese

finito il suo turno ordinerà del cibo d’asporto come della pizza e cenerà sul divano con la sua famiglia guardando un film

Il giorno libero di Lynn

Oggi Lynn è di riposo, ma decide di svegliarsi presto per andare a correre, di li a poco incontra anche le sue amiche e si danno appuntamento in tarda mattinata al parco


Considerando dove lavora, Lynn non ha molta voglia di andare a far colazione con le sue amiche in una caffetteria, così come spesso accade si danno appuntamento a casa della più anziana delle amiche per un “Afternoon Tea” ovvero una pausa tè con snack dolci e salati

Un sobrio afternoon tea


Lynn sta gustando il tè con degli “scones” un tipico dolce britannico e parlando di attualità con le sue amiche, poi intorno alle 17:00 Lynn decide di tornare a casa passando dal macellaio e prende delle scotch pie
Tornata a casa da una riordinata e scalda la cena


Essendo estate Lynn decide di curare il giardino attorno alle 19:00, il tramonto non ci sarà prima delle 22:00 e ha tutto il tempo per dedicarsi ai suoi fiori
Immancabile per lei poi uno snack serale attorno alle 21:00 / 21:30 spesso accompagnato con del tè
